Siyababa
Pushing Culture Forward
"They redefine African identity by merging fashion with powerful performance art."
Biography
Multidisciplinary storyteller Siyababa (Siyabonga Mtshali) pioneers contemporary African Avant-Garde by marrying art and fashion, creating new narratives that reform runway shows into performance pieces. Growing up queer in hyper masculine Zulu community, he experienced distorted narratives of what being African and queer looked like due to limited representation in media widely curated by Western ideas. He drives culture forward by creating authentic representation of queer African identity through fashion as performance art, challenging both Western-curated narratives and traditional community expectations, proving African queerness deserves visibility rooted in cultural authenticity rather than colonial frameworks, building new visual language for those who come after.
